Snorkeling

Snorkeling in Negombo – Morawalla

Morawalla, Negombo offers a unique snorkeling experience starting directly from the beach. During low tide, a natural rocky wall appears, creating a sheltered area rich with marine life.

The nearby lagoon water flows close to the snorkeling zone, which can sometimes affect visibility depending on tides and currents. However, the area remains an exciting and easily accessible spot for beginners and casual snorkelers.

Kayaking in Negombo Lagoon

Enjoy a peaceful 1–2 hour kayaking experience in the beautiful Negombo Lagoon.

Paddle through calm waters surrounded by mangrove forests, observe a variety of bird species, and witness traditional fishing activities. It’s a relaxing eco-adventure perfect for nature lovers and photographers.

Snorkeling in Bentota

In Bentota, snorkeling is popular around the lighthouse area and Andiran Gala, where rocky formations attract colorful reef fish and marine life. These spots are ideal for those looking to explore shallow coastal reefs.

Snorkeling in Hikkaduwa

Hikkaduwa is famous for its coral reefs. Snorkeling around Walduwa Rock offers vibrant coral gardens and diverse marine species. The shallow reef areas make it a great destination for both beginners and experienced snorkelers.

East Coast – Trincomalee & Navy Reef

On the east coast, Trincomalee offers exceptional snorkeling experiences.

Navy Reef is a vast snorkeling area with clear waters and rich marine biodiversity. You can even start snorkeling directly from the beach behind the hospital at Dutch Bay, making it easily accessible.

Snorkeling at Pigeon Island

For an unforgettable experience snorkeling with reef sharks and sea turtles, visit Pigeon Island National Park.

This protected marine park requires an entrance ticket and a short boat ride to reach the island. The crystal-clear waters and thriving coral reefs make it one of the best snorkeling destinations in Sri Lanka.

🌊 NEGOMBO

Located just north of Colombo, Negombo offers quick and easy access to exciting dive sites. From the beach or through the lagoon, you can reach most dive locations within 15–30 minutes by boat.

On the east coast, Trincomalee offers exceptional snorkeling experiences.

Navy Reef is a vast snorkeling area with clear waters and rich marine biodiversity. You can even start snorkeling directly from the beach behind the hospital at Dutch Bay, making it easily accessible.

πŸͺ¨ BENTOTA

In Bentota, the river meets the sea near a lighthouse and close to a peaceful monastery, creating a scenic departure point for divers.

After crossing the long river mouth, dive sites are reached within 30 minutes (7–9 km offshore). The underwater landscape features impressive pinnacle rock formations surrounded by abundant fish life, making it a spectacular location for underwater photography and exploration.

🐠 HIKKADUWA

Hikkaduwa is one of Sri Lanka’s most popular snorkeling and diving destinations. You can simply walk into the sea for snorkeling, while dive sites are accessible within 10–40 minutes by boat.

The area is known for its pinnacle rock formations, ranging from small to large. The famous Kirala Gala site is ideal for deeper dives, while the Conch wreck (around 20 meters) offers an exciting wreck-diving experience.

🌴 UNAWATUNA

Unawatuna provides easy access to dive sites, even during parts of the off-season. Boat rides range from 5 to 35 minutes.

The area features two deep wreck dives and several rocky pinnacle dive sites filled with large schools of fish, making it an excellent choice for adventurous divers.

Near Kirinda, close to the iconic Great Basses Lighthouse, divers can explore pristine reef systems and deep waters rich in marine biodiversity.

🚒 Batticaloa

In Batticaloa, experienced technical divers can explore the legendary HMS Hermes, a British aircraft carrier resting at 56 meters below the surface β€” one of the most famous deep wreck dives in Sri Lanka.

Oluvil is home to a couple of fascinating World War II shipwrecks, offering historical underwater exploration opportunities.

Trincomalee is ideal for beginners and snorkelers. You can easily walk into the sea to explore shallow reefs filled with colorful marine life.

Dive sites range from shallow beginner-friendly locations to deeper coral-rich sites, making it perfect for both training dives and certified divers.

At nearby Pigeon Island, snorkelers can often spot blacktip reef sharks, vibrant corals, and tropical fish in crystal-clear waters.
